Nick Marek, Play-by-Play Announcer and WCSN Vice President
Nick Marek is the Vice President of the Walter Cronkite Sports Network (WCSN) and is in his third season of broadcasting ASU Division 1 Hockey. Last season, Marek spent the majority of his time as the play-by-play announcer for the Junior A Redhawks in Peoria, but he made a few appearances in the ASU’s intermission reports and Hell Frozen Over coaches show.
This year, Marek is responsible for play-by-play duties, organizing the weekly television show, and writing Sun Devil hockey articles for House of Sparky and Cronkite Sports. He will also be dedicated to making video packages for Cronkite Sports online and assisting the newcomers with broadcast critiques and video packages. Besides broadcasting hockey games for WCSN, Marek is also the voice of the Desert Dolls Roller Derby in Phoenix.
Two summers ago, he was given an opportunity to do color commentating in Lake Placid, NY to call the United States World Junior Championship camp. Team Finland, Team Sweden and Team USA each formulated their best U-20 roster to compete, some of which play in the NHL now.
Over the summer, Marek interned at channel 3 KTVK in Phoenix with the sports department. His duties were to edit video for the hourly sports updates and the Sunday Sports Show. Some of his other interests this year are writing for House of Sparky and reporting for a weekly sports show Sun Devil Sports Night.
The WCSN gives pride to its broadcasting this year, which is why they changed the name from Walter Cronkite Hockey Broadcast Organization. This group is dedicated to other sports including ASU baseball, club lacrosse, club soccer and roller derby to name a few.
Ryan Hess, Video Production Coordinator and WCSN Vice President
Ryan Hess enters his fifth year as video production coordinator for Sun Devil Hockey. In his first three seasons he has operated the center ice camera for all Sun Devil home games and was in charge of editing select broadcasts for ASUtv cable television, and any pre-recorded video elements viewed during the broadcasts.
For the second straight season Ryan will be stepping away from the camera and taking on a directorial role for the broadcasts. As a co-founder of the new student organization, Walter Cronkite Hockey Broadcasting Organization, now known as the Walter Cronkite Sports Network (WCSN) he and co-founder Nick Licalzi implemented a scoreboard overlay graphic system into the broadcasts as well as the use of multiple live cameras. It will be Ryan’s duty to operate the scoreboard as well as direct the camera operators and on-air talent.
Ryan will also be producing the TV show “Hell Frozen Over,” providing all graphical and video needs for the program. Aside from hockey Ryan has produced broadcasts of ASU baseball, lacrosse, club soccer and Desert Dolls Roller Derby. This past spring Ryan was the on-site engineer for FASTHockey’s production of the 2012 USA Hockey High School National Championships in Salt Lake City, UT. He also setup an agreement with WCSN and the Arizona High School Hockey Association to broadcast the semi-finals and finals of the Arizona high school state championships in 2012.
In summer 2011 Ryan and Nick teamed up again, along with fellow WCSN member Nick Marek to cover the Team USA World Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, NY. While there the team broadcasted a week’s worth of games on FASTHockey.com including the operation of a video-overlay scorebar. Outside of hockey Ryan was the Sports Director at State Press Television, ASU’s campus TV station, since August of 2008. Originally from Kansas, Ryan has lived in Arizona for the last 20 years where his passion for the game generated while watching the Phoenix Roadrunners of the IHL. A recent graduate of the School of Letters and Sciences at ASU, Ryan is currently seeking opportunities with a professional sports organization.
